Beijing(Mandarin:北京), formerly recognized as Peking, is the capital of the People’s Republic of China.It is the world’s second most populous city proper and most populous capital city. Located in northern China, the city is directly controlled under the national government with 16 urban, suburban, and rural districts.Beijing borders Hebei Province with the exception of neighboring Tianjin Municipality to the southeast.

As a megacity,Beijing combines both modern and traditonal architecture,rich in history and exemplified in its global influence in politics, economy, education, history, culture, and technology. Followed by Shanghai,Beijing is the second most populous city and is China’s political,cultural and educational center.Most of the largest-owned state companies; headquarters is located here.It is also a major home to National highway,expressway,railway and high-speed rail networks.Since 2010,Beijing Capital International Airport has become the second busiest in the world in terms of passenger traffic.And in 2016,the subway network is the second longest in the world after Shanghai’s .

History of Beijing can date back three millennia. Being one and last of the Four Ancient Capitals of China,Beijing has been the political center for the past eight centuries.The city was thought to be the perfect location for the imperial capital due to surrounding the inner city from three sides and the old inner and outer walls.For much of the second millenia A.D,Beijing had the largest population in the world.It attracts lots of tourists from home and abroad for its opulent palaces, temples, parks, gardens, tombs, walls and gates.Beijing is also the cradle of culture and art in China with seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, Ming Tombs, Zhoukoudian, as well as parts of the Great Wall and the Grand Canal.The city’s traditional housing style -siheyuans,hutongs and the narrow alleyes bettwen the siheyuans in urban Beijing are main attractions for tourists.Beijing hosted 2008 Summer Olympics and was chose to be the host of 2022 winter Olympics as well.

On rankings of universities,Peking University and Tsinghua University are top 60 universities in the world.91 universities from Beijing are considered best in China.Beijing also took top place in terms of Global Fortune 500 company headquarters.
